Onyx Completes 6.2MW of Solar Carports at 16 Schools for Irvine Unified School District
Onyx helps support Irvine USD toward sustainability goals of becoming a "Net Zero Energy District" in CA
Onyx developed, constructed and energized 6.2 MW of carport canopy structures for Irvine Unified School District from 2016-2023.
The IUSD portfolio consists of 16 school campuses, with the largest being Portola HS at ~1 MW.
Onyx helped enroll IUSD into a unique program within the Southern California Edison utility territory that was one of the first of its kind in the region.
The program, called RES-BCT, allowed the district to use solar energy produced at their larger schools to offset energy usage at other locations that were unable to host solar PV—effectively affording IUSD the ability to remote net meter where they otherwise could not.
Further supporting schools and education, Onyx provides IUSD with real-time production monitoring data and visual kiosks for faculty use in expanding the learning curriculum with solar energy and solar technology.
First multi-family community in New York state to be awarded LEED Platinum certification
As a direct result of Onyx’s efforts, StuyTown and Peter Cooper Village became the first multi-family communities in New York state to be awarded LEED Platinum certification, the highest level of green building certification.
The StuyTown and Peter Cooper Village project also benefits New York City as a whole. All energy generated by the StuyTown panels is collected and distributed in the power grid by the local utility, Consolidated Edison (Con Edison). This extra solar energy will help reduce outages by taking pressure off the grid when demand for electricity is peaking on hot summer days.
