Onyx Renewables Completes 5.2-Megawatt Community Solar Project in North Troy, N.Y.

Collaboration between Onyx Renewables, Atlas Renewables, and Northern Sun Electric to provide clean energy and cost savings to GE HealthCare and New York households.

NEW YORK, December 23, 2024 — Onyx Renewables (Onyx)announces the successful completion of a community solar project in North Troy, N.Y. The 5.2-megawatt (MW) solar installation, which received permission to operate from the local utility in late October, will provide reliable clean energy at lower-than-average rates to GE HealthCare, the project’s anchor tenant, as well as roughly 650 households across the state.

By producing clean, emission-free power, the installation is expected to avoid as much carbon pollution as taking 460 vehicles off the road for one year. The project will also offer a 10% discount to residential and corporate subscribers compared to the local retail electricity rate. GE HealthCare will receive renewable energy credits (RECs) over the 25-year project term, aligning with its sustainability strategy that includes investment in renewable energy projects contributing to innovative environmental solutions.

The North Troy Solar project was developed in collaboration with Atlas Renewables (Atlas) and Northern Sun Electric. Atlas led the initial permitting, regulatory processes, and local zoning board approvals, while Northern Sun Electric served as the engineering, procurement, and construction provider.

"We partnered with Onyx for this project because of their proven track record and commitment to delivering on time and underbudget," said John Watson, Chief Development Officer at Atlas Renewables. "This North Troy installation demonstrates how community solar can deliver both environmental and economic benefits while supporting corporate sustainability objectives."

Onyx will finance, own, and operate the system over the project lifetime, and Solomon Community Solar LLC was responsible for signing up local households to receive affordable clean power from the project.

“This project represents a key milestone in advancing and aligning with our sustainability strategy,” said Kevin Sanborn, Head of ESG at GE HealthCare. “By leveraging energy from the North Troy Solar project, we are lowering costs and showcasing how renewable energy investments can deliver both environmental and financial benefits.”

"Onyx is very proud to see this project begin operations," said Patty Rollin, CCO of Onyx Renewables. "This latest project milestone reflects our commitment to advancing clean energy solutions nationwide, and we look forward to delivering affordable clean power to both the local community and GE HealthCare."

Onyx Renewables, now in its 10th year, recently celebrated the completion of more than 400 completed clean energy projects and is currently expanding its pipeline across 35 states.

Clean Energy Counsel served as legal counsel for Onyx throughout its transactions with multiple stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
